Notes
Wrecked at Gilchrist, MI on July 12th, 1982. Traded in to EMD for 6617.
The story behind the Gilchrist wreck, by Ron Kaminen:
"The 6600 had an order to take siding and meet the westbound at Gilchrist. The brakeman was from North Dakota, and was not familiar with the track, and the engineer tested a high rate of alcohol! He was 4 miles beyond Gilchrist!
The westbound had just picked up the 4408 at Trout Lake, otherwise he would have had an SD-40 on the point. The two did not communicate on the radio and were both travelling at 25 miles per hour due to track work.
There was a stretch of straight track on both sides of the collision, but they had to meet on the curve and didn't see each other but for only a few minutes.
Both crews jumped into the swamp. The engineer on the 6600 broke his collar bone, but there were no other injuries. This could have been worse if the track speed was 40mph and had there been a SD-40 on the head end of the westbound. Both trains were short because it was on a weekend. The 4408 climbed up on the 6600, the fuel tank ruptured, and ran into the exhaust pipe of the 6600. Both units were destroyed.
Needless to say alot of the men involved were not invited to the company picnic that summer! Some of the men have already passed away, but to prevent any problems I would rather not mention any names."
